The employability of graduates in the labour market depends to a large extent on their training during their studies. In addition to the undoubted importance of the organization and content of the educational process, special importance is attached to control as a special function of confirming the actual knowledge and skills of the graduate. This means that the assessment of competences, despite the sufficient study of approaches to it, remains a subject worthy of attention. Based on reviews and research results on this topic, the article discusses in detail the ways of assessing the formation of competences by students of an educational organization of higher education, and also classifies approaches to assessing the readiness of university graduates for professional activity. Taking into account the current challenges from the labor market and society for an educational organization, the key guidelines that currently determine the assessment of students’ competences are highlighted, subject to the current restrictions in force in the educational organization, the learning process, on the part of teachers and students. During the work on the topic proposed in the article, the following scientific methods of cognition were used: analysis and systematization of special literature, observation, critical analysis of practical work experience. The authors are convinced of the expediency of an active and practice-oriented assessment of knowledge and skills obtained in the educational process in individual disciplines or their logical totality, with established interdisciplinary connections, by demonstrating various practical results. The recognition and normative consolidation in the internal documents of an educational organization of higher education of a practice-oriented assessment of competences, according to the authors, will increase the purposefulness and manageability of the learning process, make it more adaptive and flexible regarding the competences that a graduate needs to receive, which ultimately will necessarily affect the potential of his professional realization. The main provisions of the article can be used by teachers of educational institutions of higher education.
