The article deals with the ways of building the performing culture of a musician in the historical aspect. The chronology of development for the basic tendencies and schools from the end of the 18th century up to our days is presented. Their activity in many respects determined the angle of development of the instrumental performing art of its time and was directed at the staged formation of both performing skills and emotional and imaginative thinking of the musician. Based on the experience of outstanding musicians-researchers of the past and our contemporaries, the author makes an attempt to analyze the methods of teaching a student of a music university and the current pedagogical methods of artistic education of a performer in the modern education system of higher education. In the conditions of the highest competition in the creative workshop of instrumental musicians and taking into account the sophistication of the modern listener, modern pedagogical approaches and the educational program as a whole, undoubtedly, must meet extremely complex and sometimes contradictory requirements for instrumental musicians. The process of building the performing culture is considered by the author as a gradual comprehension of the musician`s technical skills, always subordinate to the highest goal — the creation of an artistic image of a work. Performing culture in this case can be defined by us as a complementary relationship between the material and the spiritual that are not in opposition. Analyzing the theoretical and practical experience of researchers and musicians of previous generations, the author reveals the effectiveness of the mentioned approaches in building the performing culture of a musician-student in the educational programs of a creative university, based on the opinions of the students-performers themselves and their own learning experiences through student surveys.
