THE ENGAGEMENT OF MASTER STUDENTS IN RESEARCH WORK AS A FACTOR OF PREPARING FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES (USING THE EXAMPLE OF TOGLIATTI STATE UNIVERSITY)

| Annotation: | The relevance of the topic is determined by the need to improve the effectiveness of training highly qualified personnel in postgraduate studies. The subject of the study is the engagement of university students in research work. The purpose of the study is to analyze the engagement of university students in research work as a factor influencing the motivation for admission to a postgraduate course. The study presents materials from a survey of Master students of Togliatti State University (N=354) conducted in 2025. Their attitude to research work, as well as to the prospects of postgraduate studies, is analyzed. Research hypothesis was that the formation of Master students’ interest in the development of professional research skills has a positive impact on the motivation for admission to a postgraduate course. The study revealed two types of Master students’ engagement. The first type is typical for 68% of students and is associated with participation in common types of scientific work that form skills for creating and discussing scientific texts. For many Master students, studying science does not go beyond the preparation of their final thesis. The second type of engagement is focused on professional self-determination in the field of science. Only one third of the students would like to link their professional future with science. This category of Master students is the most promising for postgraduate studies, as it strives to develop research skills at a professional level. Despite the fact that about half of the Master students plan to continue their education in postgraduate studies, the problem of recruitment is urgent. The task of improving the effectiveness of training highly qualified personnel in postgraduate studies largely depends on the formation of conditions for the professional self-determination of students in the field of science. | ||
