The article presents the findings of the research of peculiarities of identifying of basic emotions (joy, sadness, fear, anger, neutral state) on the basis of paralinguistic speech characteristics by primary schoolchildren with mental retardation. We have revealed the specific character of conception of emotions in emotional (recognizing emotion sign) and cognitive (understanding) components, as well as verbalization of nonverbal sign components in the process of describing the speaker’s emotional state by primary schoolchildren with mental retardation: lower productivity of verbal description of emotions, poverty of emotive vocabulary, frequent use of verbs – aggressiveness.
