Economic role of small business in Russia today

The article examines the economic functions of small business and the factors affecting effectiveness of their performance in the current environment. The authors analyze statistical data on participation of small businesses in the innovation process, its business activities and the role in development of competition, participation in establishing the jobs and employment, income levels of the small businesses employees. The measures provided by the state to support small business and the factors impeding development of small businesses are determined. It is concluded that currently small business in Russia does not fully fulfill the functions that it must perform in accordance with the economic theory. It is proposed to transfer the bulk of the state support of small business to the regional level for the purpose of local markets development and providing them with import-substituting products.
