The article considers the role of participation of students in scientificresearch activity in formation of soft compences as a part of professional ones. The transition of the scientific and teaching community to the competence-based model of education actualized the discussion about the content of competences and the tools for their formation, evaluation and validation. The authors raise issues related to the formation of soft competencies and point to the need to search for efficient mechanisms that stimulate research activity of students. The authors present the results of an empirical study conducted at the Siberian State University of Telecommunications and Informatics (2017) analyze the motivation, factors influencing participation in research activities.
