This article discusses the significance of incorporating elements of ethnic culture into teaching Russian as a foreign language (RFL), focusing on exploring the ethnocultural potential of omens and superstitions as an effective tool for developing students’ lexical and grammatical skills while also delving into the Russian culture. The essence of learning a foreign language lies in acquiring the ability to effectively apply it in a cross-cultural environment. This includes mastering vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and other language aspects that enable fluent communication, as well as comprehending and appreciating the cultural nuances and contexts in which the language is used. Using superstitions and omens becomes one of the ways to achieve this goal. Serving as a unique product of Russian culture, they reflect its history, worldview, and convey the way of life of the Russian people. The primary benefit lies in the fact that they showcase not just a collection of superstitious beliefs but an entire philosophy of the world that has developed over many centuries. Therefore, studying them in RFL practice allows foreign students to immerse themselves in the world of native speakers and understand the values and beliefs at its core. Furthermore, among other things, superstitions and omens are characterized by the presence of original vocabulary with ethnocultural, nationally distinctive and linguistic-cultural characteristics. From the perspective of language teaching practice, this lexicon takes on special significance. It possesses a unique shade and carries profound contextual meaning, the mastery of which contributes not only to communicative but also intercultural competence development. Thus, superstitions and omens serve as a vital bridge between language and culture, facilitating comprehensive foreign language learning.
