The article is devoted to career guidance work with students, which is necessary in choosing a profession and life path. It should become an integral part of the pedagogical process. In high school, students are faced with the question of choosing a future profession. In this they are helped by knowledge of certain sections of the chemistry course within the framework of the school curriculum, independent development and, to a greater extent, their implementation of design and research activities during extracurricular hours. It is this type of activity that allows students to develop the ability to solve creative problems. On the basis of the MBEI “Novousmansky Lyceum” in Novaya Usman and MBEI Secondary School No. 12 in Voronezh a pedagogical experiment was conducted, in order to create motivation among students to master the professional competences of their future specialty on the basis of theoretical knowledge and the acquisition of practical experience. Students were offered the main areas of research related to the application of chemical knowledge in everyday life and in the chemical industry. According to individual topics, projects were developed, which consisted in collecting and processing information, choosing research methods, conducting a chemical experiment, analyzing and processing the results obtained, and defending the final projects. Questionnaires were conducted at the entrance and exit from the pedagogical experiment, and a survey was also carried out using the “Map of Interests” by A. E. Golomstock for 23 components. The result of the pedagogical experiment, namely the implementation of design research, was the development of high school students’ ability for practical activities, analytical thinking in relation to chemical knowledge, and strengthening the choice of a future specialty. The article is aimed at university professors and chemistry teachers.
