The age structure of the population of most countries of the world in the context of a demographic transition, characterized by both a significant decrease in both the birth rate and the death rate, is changing mainly in the direction of a reduction in labor force supply and an increase in the share of older people in the total population. The situation with the burden on the labor force can be alleviated by raising the actual retirement age by law which has been carried out in a number of countries. Considering that the regions of the Russian Federation differ significantly from each other in the initial degree of population aging, the speed of response of the working age population after changes in the pension legislation of the Russian Federation will be different. Based on the calculation of the series of population dynamics of different age groups, demographic load coefficients and aging coefficients for 2012-2022, an assessment of the depth of shifts in the age structure of the population of the Lipetsk region after raising the upper limit of retirement age was carried out. According to the results of the study, it was found that since after the increase in the retirement age, the improvement of the situation with the number of able-bodied population in the region is not significant, but there is also an increase in the aging processes from the bottom up, then corrective actions on the part of regional authorities should be equally aimed at reducing the mortality rate and increasing the birth rate.
